Gate woes...

Two day working on the broken gate opener and it still is not working.  We can't have it not latch because of the great Hoss escape; so we have to get it fixed.  I was able to re-wire where he shredded the wire and get it to latch when off; but we still have to manually turn it on to unlock - and open it.

I'll be calling Mighty Mule support tomorrow and if the news is bad - I'll be off to Tractor Supply for a new gate.

Ben is still in bed 24x7; but did manage to go to work part-time on Thursday and Friday. Re-cooping over the weekend.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year 2014

December 17, 2013

Hi Family & Friends,

I hope this finds you all doing great this holiday season.  We are doing well.  This posting is my "at the moment" highlights - off the top of my head - for the year.  Other postings can be seen on this blog.

About Ben:  He started a new position with the company he works for, Galen College of Nursing in San Antonio.  Formerly he was the sole IT technician for both campuses, staff, students and faculty.  He now is the Simulation Center Lab technician and having a blast.  Learning the newest technology in training the nurses, setting up scenarios of the electronic mannequins with automation for every hospital scene -- from birthing a baby to diagnosing general conditions and care.  He comes home with a new funny story daily and is thankful of the new job.

About Darla:  Still in the IT Operations department for Peoplefluent.  It's a great job for MANY reasons; but mostly; I'm not traveling anymore, I work from home, and have been able to shake out some cobwebs to use my Unix and database technical skills.  Only drawback is once every 5 weeks, I have to pull the on-call shift - working evenings, nights and weekends.  But even then, I'm thankful for the job because it keeps me from playing in traffic, going to and from an office; PLUS, did I already say; No more Business Travel!!!

The Farm:
Goats - This spring, our does gave us 12 kids.  It is always fun to see the kids playing, but sad when you have to get rid of them.  We kept 2 of the girls; but got rid of all the boys and two of the moms.  We have learned the hard way is to only have one breed so that mating them is not dangerous for the girls.  This was the first year we milked the goats.  We made 6 pounds of cheddar cheese, 4 pounds of parmesan cheese, 3 pounds of agasio cheese, and I can't begin to guess how much yogurt, butter and feta cheese. Plus many more gallons of milk for hobbies, making soap or drinking.  It was a real adventure and so funny how the guys in my life didn't mind sitting up at the "teet"-ee bar!  I'll take help wherever I can get it.

Chickens - about 40 of them.  Summertime gives us over 2-3 dozen eggs daily; but since winter is here and the days are so short - I'm lucky if I get 5 --  Slackers.

Gardening -  Summer garden was and still is plentiful.  We had our first freeze last week, but I was able to pull up the tomatoes that still had fruit on them and put them into the greenhouse.  They are still ripening so we should have tomatoes into February.  The fall garden started off slow; but is starting to look good.  Plenty of lettuces, greens and herbs.  Still have a little time to wait for the rest of the crop.  Patience!  Ben also won the war against Bermuda in the garden; but not without the expense of the fiery death of a few scarecrows.  I laugh now; but it wasn't too funny watching my art and hard work go up in flames.

Hoss - our 2-1/2 year old Pyrenees, is recovering this week from seizures induced by a bacterial infection.  The vets hope that once the infection clears up, he won't seizure anymore.  He's doing much better today and I'm confident I'll see him return to normal very soon. Other than that, he's been a very good farm dog and is so much a part of the family!  In the next year we plan to start looking for him a partner so he doesn't have to tend to the farm protection all by himself.  That should give him a playmate plus some relief from doing all the patrols alone.

Five Cats!  Yikes -- that sounds like a lot!.  Callie, Princess, Veronica (Roni), Patty, Midnight Crosby.  They are all outside cats and are doing a great job keeping the mice and rats off the farm and out of the barn & house. They have brought me other presents, too -- but I'll spare you the gory details.   Midnight (Middy) Crosby was adopted from Ben's Dad.  She finally has made herself at home, not scratching, biting or hissing.  I can even pick her up and brush her.  She even it getting closer to the other cats. Major accomplishment.

Bees:  This  has been a labor of "LOVE".  Not as easy as it appears or we are making more out of it than it should be.  Either way; we should have honey in 2014.

Finally, our Ag Exemption was approved this year.  This is a tax saving of thousands of dollars.  Doesn't make us any richer, just allows us to put the extra funds back into the farm; instead of paying higher taxes.  This is good for our retirement planning.  Yeah!!!

Everyone on both our sides of the Family are doing well.  Dad comes to visit with Laura a couple times a year; and is quite the successful fisherman!  Mom and I get to do lunch at least monthly; and visit when work schedules allow.  My sisters and I have had a few opportunities (sometimes with Mom) to get together without spouses and kids.  My brother's family is growing and is continuing the Hilsmeier namesake.  We get to see Ben's brother, Robert and sister-in-law more often than the other siblings; only because they come here. We know the road runs both ways, but it is very hard for us to leave the livestock unless it is an emergency. We don't like to burden anyone with all these daily chores unless we have no choice.   That said - everyone needs to come here to visit.  We have plenty of room for overnight guests.  We'd love to see you and look forward to you coming for visit.

Come back and check this blog as you have time and I hope you enjoy our shenanigans and following our stories.

Off for now to finish decorating.  Yes, I'm late as usual...

May your Holidays be Festive and full of Blessings and Love.  May you remember the great times of 2013 and your New Year come in with a bang and good fortune.

Hugs and Love to you all...
Darla (and Ben)

Christmas Day!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Ben is still Bed-Ridden!  He took 2 days off of work (which he never does) and had Christmas Eve and Day off as holidays.  He hopes to get out of bed for dinner today.  I totally understand his discomfort; but ready for him to be back up and running.  As he is too!

We were up early; and I ran off to Paula to watch the kids open their Christmas gift.  Laura is here visiting and she and I assembled the boy's air hockey table last night and got it loaded for delivery this morning.  It was alot of fun; but sweet little Holly has the flu - so didn't hang around too long.  I can't afford to be bed-ridden!

Hoss is doing so much better and has actually started Barking more regularly and puppy walking with me again.

Mom and Laura will be over this evening for Prime Rib Christmas dinner.  Yum!

Update -- Ben did make it to the shower and dinner tonight! - Didn't stay up too long - but, did make it! Yeah..

Down for the count!

Very productive day ends early with Ben throwing his back out.  We were rounding up the two younger goats for worming and Ben caught one by the leg.  But Libby wanted to go another way and took Ben with her.  He went DOWN! Almost fainting in pain; he shuffles his way back up to the house for an Epson salt bath.  In bed at 2:30pm - Down for the Count!

7AM Panic Attack!!!

Hoss!!!  I went out to feed the farm this morning and Hoss was nowhere to be found.  The gate he broke yesterday blew open sometime during the night/morning... or he pulled it open as he destroyed the rest of my gate Christmas decorations.  He's escaped.

I ran in - grabbed my keys, yelled at Ben "you go West then East on Ranger Creek Rd., I'll go into the neighborhood".  Ben found him at 25 Ranger Creek Road, 1/4 mile from I-10.  The nice part is, he came directly to Ben and didn't even put up a fight to get into the truck to come home!!!

Whew!  A morning scare we didn't need.  But, he's home safe and sound.  Thank you Lord for answering my prayers!

First project - FIX the Gate!

Rain Accumulation in 2013 - 36-3/4 inches year to date

12/21 - Storm blew through this morning, giving us 3/4" of Rain and a mild cool front.. Colder Front hits tomorrow, but no rain expected.

12/13 - Trace-- Maybe 1/2".  Not really measurable - but still was nice and WET all day long!

11/25 - 2-1/2" of  more slow rain!!! And COLD!  No painting on my vacation days.

11/22 - 1" of Rain bringing in the COLD.   Lighting the fireplace and this will make it nice for the Holidays.

11/5 - 7 -  Drizzle on and off for 3 days totaling 1/4".  Every little bit helps.

10/16 - Raining again - today - 1/2".

10/15 - 1-1/2" Came with COLD Front - Hopefully to stay.

10/14 - 1/2" Nice Drizzle

10/13 - 1" Overnight with Great Lightening Show

10/5:  1/4" -- we'll still take anything we can get!

9/28:  Started Raining about 3pm and continued thru the night -- totaling 3/4" -- Thermometer says 70 outside -- but I think it is more like 60... Time to get a better weather station.  Windows open, fan on -- enjoying the breeze and cooler temps and WET ground.

9/21:  Cool temperatures overnight, enjoying the whole house fan bringing in the 65 deg. temps.  Awh.. Heat relief for a little while.

September 20 - 3" -- Started raining early in the morning with the collision of Manuel & a Northern blowing thru.  Rained all day thru the evening totaling 3" for the day.  Oh, we have been blessed.

September 19 - 2/10" -- Love these evening showers.

September 18 - 1/10" -- Another evening shower!  So Delightful....

September 16 - 1/4" Evening Shower!

September 15 - 3/4" Afternoon Shower!

September 10 - 2 1/2" of rain this morning... Wasn't even predicted. Came out of no where and flooded.  I'm glad the weather team is wrong!

September 4 - Trace of rain this morning.  Temperatures are lower and it is rather delightful!

September 2 - Happy Labor Day!  Went over to the neighbors for a holiday cookout and a downpour
hit!!  3/4 inch.  Perfect end to vacation and holiday weekend!

August 26 - IT IS RAINING!!!! Not measurable yet and hope it lasts ALL DAY!!!  --  Final tally for the day = ONE INCH!!!  Yea!!!!!

August 24 - Trace --- Brief --- really BRIEF downpour!  Not even enough to knock the dust down.  -- We have 60% chance on Monday -- Say your prayers, wash the cars, hang laundry on the line and do your dancing!!!!

July 8 - 40% chance of rain resulted in a "trace".  We had a nice downpour to get everything wet and several short showers.  But when I checked the rain gauge; there is only a trace captured.

June 30 - Sunday morning - 1" of rain and drizzle all day!  Nice relief after 104 degree temps on Saturday afternoon.

June 12 - A late afternoon storm dropped 1-1/4 inch today.  It was a nice rain with lots of noise and flash.

June 8 - Trace shower blew thru around sunrise.  Then around 5pm another shower passed thru; this time leaving us with 1/4".  Again - every little bit helps.

June 2 - Sunday Early Morning (4:30 am) I'm awaken to thunder and lightening in the near distance.  Remembering we hadn't covered the wood splitter, tiller and I had just treated hoss with an herbal fleas and blackfly repellant (didn't want him to get drenched) - I dashed outside to take care of the chores.  Meanwhile - Ben turns on The Weather Channel and informs me the rain will miss us.   Optimistic - he's wrong, I crawl back in bed and wait; hoping my efforts weren't in vain. !!!  Yippee !!! The rain cell built and we got 1/2 in.   It also brought us cooler nights - so a double win!  All is well on the farm.

May 28 - May 30:  Took some vacation days for the Memorial Day Holiday - so the accumulative rain for the long weekend = over 3 1/2".  Although a wet vacation - this is very welcome rainfall!!!

May 25:  What a beautiful sound and sight. Lightening, Thunder and RAIN!!! --  Since yesterday around 11am thru this morning at 8am; we have been blesses with 2 3/4" of liquid sunshine.   I'm loving putting on my rubber boots and rain coat to do my morning farm chores.   Thank you Lord & Mother Nature!!!

May 15: ONE inch!  This was a loud, blowing and bright storm around 4am.  Nice and very welcome!

May 10:  1/2 inch hit just as the sun was coming up and the farm coming to life.

May 2: ONE more inch!!!   Brought in a late cold front - getting into the 30's tonight.

April 30:  1-1/2 inches -- Beautiful Thunder & Lightening Show!!!

April 17: 2/10 inch - Every little bit helps.

April 2: 1-1/2 inches - YEA! Keep it coming....

March 31: 3/4 inch - A wonderful Easter Blessing

January:  A good start to the weather woe's of Boerne, TX & Rucka Farm.  It started drizzling (Jan. 8th - "Happy Birthday Hunter") and then continuous rain thru this morning (Jan. 9th).  A total so far of 4 inches.  A bit more expected today thru tomorrow so we'll keep you posted on the accumulation.

I'm thankful for Rain but more for the new roof and the gutters.  This would have flooded the living room, dining room, kitchen and basement.  Just in time!!!

Hoss - relapse back to Puppy"tude"

HOSS!!! -- Well he's so much better! We slept to the sounds of his barking ALL NIGHT LONG!!!!
But, he's acting more like a puppy again... I'm afraid all our training is lost, so I'm apprehensive to let him out to pasture with the chickens until I watch his interaction and behavior.  Need to make sure the neurons are reconnect fully.

This morning he showed another behavior of his puppy-side!  He was pulling all my Christmas decorations off the gate!  In that process he grabbed the gate-lock transmitter wire and pulled it apart. So I don't know if he just wanted to play with Christmas or he wanted to short the wire out and open the gate to RUN!  Either way, the gate opener and Christmas Décor are broken.

After his pills (peanut butter didn't work at all) and his breakfast; I let him out to pasture.  The big pasture and watched him head down the hill to the low lands.  I didn't follow. Goats didn't follow. And then I let the chickens out with a prayer.  "Please don't let Hoss eat them or play with them to death!"

I left to get the truck inspection and oil changed.  By the time I got back, there seemed to be harmony on the farm.  He was in his usual spot near the gate, waiting to be let back in the yard.

He is now sleeping peacefully in the garden.  Whew.. What a big puppy!

I'm so thankful he's getting better!

Hoss Update!

Hoss is doing much better!!!  He hasn't had a seizure since last Saturday afternoon.

First couple of days he was in a daze, very shy and skiddish around us.  But, as days went by, he improved.
Yesterday he started barking again and did the puppy "play with me" dance with the cats.  I put him out in the barn pasture for about an hour and he was ready to come back into the yard.  He went with me later in the day to pick eggs and did his typical patrol.
I left for a quick errand and was afraid he'd dart out the gate to follow me.  So, I'm keeping a close watch on where he is at all times and may have to keep putting him out when we leave. (almost back to normal routine).

This morning, starting around 3:30 am he started barking and barking and barking.  This is normal for him and music to our ears.  Couldn't see what he was barking at, but just glad he's getting his personality back. I'm going to see about taking him out to the  back pasture for a walk.  I'll bring along a leash in case I need to lead him back to the yard.

Funny, though.  We've been hiding the pills in his food; but he's getting wise to the cheese balls and ham wrapped cheese.  I think I'll try peanut butter tonight and see if we can trick him to eating it on his own.  Although, he's not difficult to pop it down his mouth - which fortunately is proven to be quicker than watching him eat and keeping the cats out of his food.

More to come as we continue to see his progress.

Friday the 13th - December 2013

Had to take Hoss to the ER vet today.  He hadn't been himself for a couple of days; then I witnessed what was really wrong!  He was having seizures which actually paralyzed him for about 30-2 hours.  Depending on intensity.  I tried to move him by myself; but could lift the 120 pounds of dead weight; then remembered my neighbor may be home from work!  YES!! she was and jetted over to help me load him into the truck.  Pretty strong for a couple of girls.  Thank you Neighbor!!! I don't know what I would have done without you...

Hoss was conscious, but still paralyzed and had to be carried into the vet on a gurney.  After blood test and examinations, apparently, he has some sort of bacterial infection. The doctor suspects this is causing his seizures.  Just as he was coming around and getting his strength back and we were fixing to leave to come home; he had another one.  Oh, my God!  Worst thing I think I could have witnessed.  They said though, he's not in pain, nor even realize anything is going on. The vet decided to keep him overnight and put him on IV with antibiotics, valium and phenobarbital. We were able to pick him up Saturday late morning only to have him seizure again at 3:30ish.

It's Sunday afternoon, and he's slowly getting better as the meds from the overnight stay wear off.  He's eating well and enjoying the added cheese (with pills hidden in them) to his meals.  He's apprehensive and shy in behavior and wants nothing to do with me.  That makes me sad... My dog is broken.  I'm praying he'll be better soon!

To end the dramatic day, we made homemade pizza.  While taking it out of the oven, I slipped on a rug in the kitchen; falling into the oven door.  I left a palm print on the INSIDE window of the 375 degree oven.  Guess I don't have to tell you how bad my burn is.  Many tears later; I went to bed to END the Friday the 13th Nightmare.

It could only get better from here....

Happy Thanksgiving Week 2013

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Friends and Family!!!

I was able to take the WHOLE week off for vacation and hoped to be able to get some outside painting done.  But, the weather didn't cooperate so settled on doing many indoor tasks which needed to be done.  Repaired the built-in hutch, kept the fire stoked, slept late, made pet food, cleaned for company, many loads of laundry and just enjoyed farm time.   Sigh.. busy but good fun.

We purchased another woodstove for the patio to keep us warmer on the cold days.  We love to sit outside - even if the temperature drops to freezing (which it hasn't yet).  The fire and wall we put up helps keep it nice and toasty.   The cats don't mind the heat too.  We had the regular hillbilly stove -- which we adored for conversation; but there's a time the rusted bucket, needed to retire so we upgraded.  Harbor Freight had them on sale... but when we went to pick it up at our closest location -- purchased it, loaded it, heard a rattle and realized it was broken... So a long drive to South San Antonio where there were 4 in stock.  Quick exchange and heading back to home.  A day adventure with many more to come for this project.  Nothing can be so simple.

Monday - had lunch with mom and ran errands.  Enjoyed a new Tamale shop in town and shopping at Tractor Supply (yes, that's crazy to enjoy that.. but now that is the life).  And then off to Bealls.  We always need something nice to wear around the holidays. Quick stop at HEB and Twins - I "think" I'm set for the week -- NOT!!! there will be many small trips to get what we forgot or decided we really needed.. We are SO typical and I'm thankful the HEB is 5 miles one way instead of MILES away.  Tis the season to give Thanks!

Tuesday - ran errands with Ben and watched it snow--- Yes SNOW!  Didn't stick but was fun to see.  Several stops to our Tractor Supply and Home Depot for 'stuff' to get the stove pipes and accessories for the stove's trial run.  Hopefully we will get a fire in it before company arrives. We also took care of the long needed GMC truck maintenance from the dealer to keep the warranty in check.

Wednesday - Stoked up the new woodstove for trial run.  The house stove had already been running for several days.  I hadn't realized how much wood we have burned over the last year and our "close" pile has dwindled... Time to pull out the tractor and trailer and bring the remote piles from the well drilling tree trimming project last spring up to the house for heat!  Sounds like work to me!  But that's why I don't go to the gym... to much manual labor to do around here.

Thursday - Happy Thanksgiving!   Mom was able to join us for Steak & Lobster.  We just didn't want to cook 8 hours for 1 meal; so we kept it simple.  Kept the fireplaces going (inside and out), watching lots of Hallmark holiday shows, cleaning  house and chilling-out until dinnertime.    The Neighbors stopped by for a visit by the fire and shared a Meade cocktail (not homemade yet - just sampling).  Robert & Micha arrived around 7pm after a full day with their family and the road trip on I-10 with the rest of the hunters coming West for the long weekend.  Time for another drink!

Friday - Foggy, cold morning - Coffee then mimosas with Micha while Robert hunted. No Luck in the AM.  Throughout the day, Ben & Robert braved Black Friday, shopping sales at Tractor Supply and worked diligently to get the gas fryer going. Robert headed out in the afternoon to hunt and Ben headed out again to Academy to buy a new cooker. Robert made it back early from hunting after getting a 3 point buck.  After a quick clean/dressing; we attempt to start the evening cooking.  Unfortunately, a gas leak from the tank made us decide to fry indoors.  YUCK -- the mess. But Dad's Redfish, added oysters, french-fries, coleslaw & hush puppies - it was a good meal and great company.

Saturday - little warmer morning but we kept the fire going anyway.  Robert out hunting again in hopes to see / get another deer.   Nothing again.  They decide to head home afternoon to miss some of the traffic and give Robert time to process his deer.  We spent the rest of the day planting our fall seedlings in the garden, loading up more wood for the next week's cold front, and settled in for another night of Hallmark Christmas movies.

Sunday - spend the day in bed - watching more Hallmark Christmas movies.  We did manage to have breakfast, and lunch in bed - but finally surfaced to eat dinner at the table. HA!!! That was a chore.

Monday AM - my ON CALL for 1 week and evening/night shift tasks.   I'm going to go cry now and try not to be so hard to get along with this week.

Overall - a great Thanksgiving Holiday.

Blessing and a lot to be thankful for.. Hugs - Darla

Happy Birthday to my Brother -- Brett!!!

I'm so lucky to have a big brother -- Although I don't get to see him often -- He's on my mind and in my heart.  I'm learning to reminisce and enjoy the memories of younger days.

Beautiful Day and Working Inside

Saturday morning started beautifully.  Cool 65 degrees.  Opened all the windows and started cleaning and vacuuming window seals, baseboards and any corner where Halloween décor was building.  Yes, seems this time of year, we end up with small spider webs in every corner, nook and cranny. This lead to a conversation - "what do you want to do today?"

Last weekend we gardened outside in +90 degree temps.  This weekend, the project after cleaning, we worked indoors, laying temporary flooring in our back door foyer until we can start kitchen / bathroom renovations.  The new flooring will need to go throughout the full area -- but I was tire of walking on concrete fiber board and carpet remnants and tripping on where thresholds are supposed to be.

Although, temporary, a nice change to the back entrance.

Dinner out, hot tea on the porch w/the cats and dog - looking forward to a full moon, COOL night's sleep with all the windows open.

Nice Sweet Pecan Recipe -- Pecan Pie Bars

SO SIMPLE!!!  -- I doubled the recipe and used an 17.2 x 11.2 x 1.5" baking dish for the Alamo Area Beekeeping Association meeting on 9/17/2013.  I'll post any feedback / results of the dish.

Credit goes to Robyn @ Add a Pinch.com  -- Below copied from Robyn's site so I won't lose her recipe in case she ever takes her blog/site down.

Oh boy, do I have a treat to share with you! These Pecan Pie Bars are absolutely scrumptious and something I think you’ll want to make soon!

The shortbread crust topped with pecan pie makes an impressive addition to any holiday table or for entertaining.

Now, I love a good pie crust, but this shortbread crust is a delicious change with pecan pie that I think you might just love, too. Light, flaky, and so very easy to make that even if you are pie crust challenged, you can whip out these pecan pie bars and impress your guests.

A restful weekend -- Not on this farm!

Saturday started early back and forth to the Kendall County Brush and Mulch facility where we loaded and unloaded 7 more loads of mulch for the garden.  Temperatures are still up into the mid 90's so an early start was required. Hot, dusty work - but will be worth it when the garden delivers.

Sunday early start too:  spreading the 7 loads of mulch out.  Mostly has to be done by hand (pitchfork is my tool of choice).  Still a few bare areas; so this means another Saturday weekend hauling mulch.

We did make it to the nursery and got our fall veggies; cauliflower, broccoli, kale, red and green cabbage, bib leaf lettuce and mustard greens.  I'm sure we'll get some more in the ground later; but this is a good start.

Will keep you posted on the goodies.

Good Bye - Sierra and her two doelings!

Another sad day to say goodbye to one of the sweetest breeds of goats I've ever met.  The Saanen breed is so friendly, quite and gentle.  Never had to worry about her head-butting any humans.

Our girl, Sierra has given us several kids of the past several years.  All were white with patches of tan or black.  She was the best mother, never having difficultly with birth; or getting her kids on milk and keeping up with her.

2011 - Sierra gave us the first twin Saanen/Pygmy mix doelings (Pearl & Opal)

2012 - Pearl kidded triplets:  Saanen-Pygmy / Toggenburg-Nubian mix (2 girls - 1 boy)
2012 - Sierra kidded triplets: Saanen / Toggenburg-Nubian mix (2 boys - 1 girl)
2012 - Opal kidded twins:  Saanen-Pygmy / Toggenburg-Nubian mix (2 boys)
2013 - Sierra kidded triplets again:  Saanen / Nubian mix  (2 girls - 1 boy)

A total of 15 goats in 3 seasons - where she was either the mom or grand-mom!!!

I hated to get rid of her, but, if we are going to stick with one breed to avoid the mix breeding drama - Nubians seem to be the way we  should go.

Good Bye Missy!

We acquired her January 2011 and she gave us 4 boys since then.  She was a very good milking goat - but hostile with the others when food was involved.  So instead of letting her dry up; we sold her to a nice family from Leander (Wed. 8/28/2013) who is excited to have fresh raw goats milk for their family.

I do miss my girls; but have to do what is right for the farm as a whole.

The weekend...

It was a productive weekend.  Burning, polishing concrete counter tops, milking goats, posting things for sale on Craigslist, making more cheese and installing the concrete countertops.

The countertops came out great!  I'm very pleased with the results.  We need to find the right product to seal them with; but have learned lessons on what we want to do and not to do for the next concrete counter.  We just have to decide if we are going to do the bathroom or outdoor kitchen counters before we tackle the rest of the kitchen.  (pix to come)

Ben, brother's birthday was today and Robert stopped by for Birthday Dinner.  After a trip to the barn to pick eggs and take a turn at milking the goats; we settled in for grilled steaks (on charcoal - instead of the gas grill), baked potatoes, salad and chocolate pie.  Yes, I actually made a pie!  It was something I haven't done in a while and enjoyed the change in cooking.  Something special, Robert seemed to enjoyed the teat-e-bar experience and using our homemade goat milk butter and sour cream on the potato.  He even took a quart of "his" milk to a co-working who is lactose intolerant to try to see if he can handle raw goat's milk.  I'm anxious to hear the results.  (pix to come)

Tonight is my last night On-Call for the week!  Hope I get a full night's sleep.  Until another day -- Love to All!

Working.. but with time while I wait...

Good evening all.. My after hours on-call tasks started at 5:30 pm after a full day (and nite) at work... and now the clock just clicked 10pm -- well maybe I should say "chirp, squawked, whooo'd....  (picture and story to follow).. but, as of now, I am expecting at least 2-3 more hours of work based on the history of this customer that I was recently provided. So -- why not while I watch the time click away -- I take a few moments to share some thoughts ... BIG SMILE!!!!

Yes!!!  I called the vet today and Stella, our first goat (noted in the previous posting), is free and clear and NOT contagious to the rest of the girls.  I should call them a herd; but that just doesn't sound right for the ladies.  Her infection was just that; an infection -- typical - not contagious.  My prayers were answered and I appreciate every guardian angel that listened to my pleas!  OK - enough said or I'll be sobbing tears of joy again tonight!!! Yes, already cried this morning.

Although, it was rather comical to watch Stella to be reacquainted with her 'sisters'.  I'd expect smelling and tail wagging (like dogs). NO!  LOL  They took turns head butting and jousting.  Yeah! re-setting dominance into the group. In the end, Stella was the Queen of the girls.  Then she led them patiently to her private resort (hospital).  Everyone enjoyed her leftover food, hay, shelter and water.   They "think" have a new feeding spot.  --WRONG--  But in the meantime, I enjoyed seeing them reunite!  I'm happy all is well on the farm.

So the timepiece we have that chirps, etc.   Actually, many of you may have seen it in Harriett Carter catalogs or similar venues.  My mother-in-law loved birds, so for one holiday (can't remember which one), I purchased this clock that has a different bird song on the hour.  Yes, silly things we buy for loved ones that want nothing.  Ok -- I'll bore you:
Sparrow just reminded me of the Hour

1=Robin
2=Mockingbird
3=Blue Jay
4=House Wren
5=Tufted Titmouse
6=Oriole
7=Mourning Dove
8=Chickadee
9=Cardinal
10=Sparrow
11=White-breasted Nuthatch
 12=House Finch

As Ben and his family cleaned up the family home, he brought this home for us.  Every hour (in my home office), the birds will sing their song.  Occasionally, we will be in the other room and say, "what's that?"  then laugh because it's the bird clock!   It may sound 'hokey' but it still makes me smile to hear his mother's laugh at the bird songs on the hour.  Fond memories are what we continue to live for, create and share.

On that note.. it is now almost 11pm and the White Breasted Nuthatch will be singing her song, my upgrade project is still running and hopefully coming to a close soon -- So, for tonight I leave you with bird songs in your hearts, minds and souls....
Hugs to all.!

Time Flies when you are BUSY!!!

Can't believe I haven't found time to update you on all the things going on the past 10 days.

Work kept me awake for almost 23 hours last Tuesday evening (8/6) for upgrade issues.  I volunteered to cover on-call for a co-worker while he had an evening out - only to have troubles come my way.  I finally finished the tasks at 5:30 AM Wednesday morning... Just in time for Ben to remind me we needed to tend to the sick goat.

Yes, besides milking the goats twice a day; our first girl, Stella, came down ill.  After a trip to the vet Tuesday afternoon and building fences and gates to give her a personal quite place to recover; we still don't have the test results back from the lab.  Needless to say, I'll spare you all the gruesome details but will share that we 'think' she is doing great.  The good news, as of now; she's never had a fever, lost her appetite, nor desired to be 'alone' (a typical characteristic for ailing goats).  So I continue to pray and stay optimistic... she will be ok.

Onward!  Ben pulled the forms off the concrete countertops and they turned out great.  We have been letting them set up the rest of the week to follow-up this weekend with the slurry then polishing. Hopefully they will be ready for installation in the next week or so.  (pictures to come).

The milk has been piling up in the refrigerator.  I've managed to make more yogurt, butter, mozzarella and feta cheeses.  Hoping this weekend to make more cheddar and parmesan and try some swiss or provolone cheese.  These are a bit more labor intensive than the other items; but store easier and get better with age.

I started my on-call week again yesterday!!!  -- I swapped with another co-working in hopes that when I need a favor or swap; they will remember I was a team player and helped them out.  So last night wasn't too bad - in bed by 11pm - sleep light and paged at 5:30am.  Had to get up anyway... So I'm spending my 'break' (afternoon between normal day's work and the evening work) -- sharing my thoughts.. Although I feel a little groggy, I will need to revisit this posting to see what I've forgotten, typo'd or just rambled on about.  Only good thing about on-call week; Ben takes care of dinner, evening chores, and cleaning the kitchen.  He usually pitches in; but he has to fly solo during this week.

You probably have noticed there hasn't been any weather updates -- because there's nothing to CHEER about!!! .. It is August - high hitting 100's and lows near mid 70's.  NO RAIN; so we have been dragging the hoses around to give a bit of relief to the plants, pets and farm.

Hope everyone's summer is fun and ready for Autumn.

More Butter Making & Produce from the Garden

4 cups of Cream - makes 1/2 pint of Butter.  Followed the recipe (below) using the food processor.

I put the cream in a food processor and turn it on.  At first it bulks up and becomes whipping cream.  Then as you continue processing the cream, the fat globules begin to appear as they separate from the milk.  When there is more fat/butter than liquid, I stop the food processor.  I pour out and save the buttermilk to use in cooking.
Since I don’t want my milk to sour on me, I want to remove all the buttermilk from the butter.  I just want the fat.  So I add an equal part of cold, cold water to my butter.  I turn the processor back on.  After a minute, I pour out and discard the water.  I repeat this process on more time and the water is virtually clear.
Now I place the butter into a bowl.  Using a wooden spoon, I knead the butter to ensure that all of the liquid has been removed.  As water appears, I pour it out.  This takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes.  You can also add sea salt if you desire. (which I added a "tad" of all natural fine sea salt).  Placed in  freezer with cellophane and a tight lid.

http://www.texashomesteader.com/2010/01/20/making-goat-butter/

The heat is taking a toll on the garden -- Basil is looking good - but the tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans are drying up.

Although, we still are getting quite a bit of produce.  I'm having to pick the tomatoes "pink" to beat the birds to the fruit -- if I wait 1 day longer -- they will devour them.

FUN tonight in Blanco -- St. Ferdinand's Texas Gold Rush - annual fund raiser.  Going to rendezvous with Robert and Micha (who are staying in San Marcos area), and get to see our friends from Kendalia (Danny, Mary, Robert & Deb).  I'm sure I'll buy something too, either at the auction or the silent auction.  A great time always....

July 31st--- Just a day for resting!!!

Well, today I was supposed to go back to work after a 4 day weekend - full of fun, food, friends, cheese making and chores; but I didn't sleep much due to the hand cramps and a horrible headache.  I'm not one to take anything for my ailments, but really wanted to today...  I refrained and finally got on up to help Ben get off to work and start my milking routine.

I was just going to milk Belle, but after seeing the condition of Stella, I knew she couldn't wait until tonight.  We have been doing Belle 2x a day, Stella, every third milking an Missy once a day.. I was trying to dry Stella up and wanted to start to milk her every other day and eventually not at all.  Also drop Belle back down to 1x a day -- but she's so endowed; we could milk her 3 - 4 times a day and get a solid 2 gallons from her.  Missy was borderline. I really could milk her 2x's a day --- but we have so much milk and the time it takes to do them, I just don't have the time on workdays.

Anyway, after my morning milking and hanging out laundry - my headache and sinuses were just not better and I was an emotional  wreck.   So -- I did something totally against my nature and called in sick today.  Especially after having vacation days.  I typically would just fight thru it.

I napped and took it easy until lunchtime -- watching TV (FoodNetwork) and kept an eye out for a UPS delivery.  Finally, I was able to keep my eyes open without tearing up and do a little check in at work.  Geez.. I've really got to get to work tomorrow no matter what! But for today, will walk away and finish my 'sick day'.

More milking tonight and call it an early evening...

Hugs to all...

Belle and a long weekend!

A Nice Friday at work and ready for a long weekend after being on call last week.  But while milking Belle Friday morning; she was so engorged and tender I couldn't get anything out of one of her utters.  She fought me, kicked me in the cheek and just was not cooperating.  I called the neighbor and the vet and "guessed" she had a touch of  mastitis.  Poor girl!!!   After many counseling sessions and several website options - Ben and I head down to the barn Friday night with a hot compress and homemade utter balm (olive oil, coconut oil, lemon balm and peppermint oil) to see if we can give her some relief.  Fortunately, it works and an hour later, she is milked dry - with little fuss!

Saturday, we start early off to Home Depot for project supplies; (of course not until after the morning chores - again Belle is doing better).  Ben was able to get my dishwasher installed last weekend and now we need to anchor it to keep it from tipping over and he would like to experiment with concrete countertops.  We actually went to dinner.  Had a Groupon $50 of food for $25.  Sounds like a good deal, until we checked out the menu.. But it was worth the splurge.

Sunday - Regular chores, goats, dog, garden -- NO RAIN... so dragging hoses around trying to keep everything alive.   Ben collected supplies to get started on the concrete counter tops.  Lots of measuring, calculating and measuring again.  Oh yes -- don't forget YouTube University!!!

I worked on the bee feeder -- It has been dripping a steady drip of syrup.  It seems to be defective.  So I found the frame feeder we got with the original box and added wire mesh to the feeder so the bees don't drown.  It appears this will hold 1 gallon of syrup - so should last at least a week.  While adding the new feeder, I was able to inspect the bee hive -- it looks GREAT!  We have some happy bees, with honey, pollen and brood.  Will check again next weekend to insure they find their new food source and be prepared to replenish the supply if needed.

Monday -- Cheese making - two pots going at the same time with two temperature gauges.  Similar process, different cultures and curing process.

Cheddar Cheese (Ben's experiment)
3 gallons raw goat's milk = 3# cheese

Parmesan Cheese (my experiment)
2 gallons raw goat's milk = 2# cheese
Curds and whey

Homemade Cheese Press (this is the Cheddar)

Cheddar on Left - Parm on Right

Cheddar removed from press and air curing.

Parm resting waiting for is salt bath.

Placed the Parm in salt brine.

Tuesday --
Now we wait!  4 days to wax the Cheddar a store to sharpen 6-9 months.
Removed the Parm after 24-36 hours from brine and coat with olive oil - Store in wine fridge 6-9 months to age.  --  Cheese making is teaching us patience!

Ben assembles the concrete forms for the concrete counter tops.   Step 1 of another project started...

GOT MILK? -- Ice Cream & Kefir.... then a Scorpion in Bed!!!

Friday night ends with a hoot!!! Ben decides he's going to be the goat milk mad scientist and make butter from the goat milk.  He pours a full quart into a bowl and proceeds to whip with the hand mixer.  It didn't work.  We will have to try it from the cream later.

Saturday starts off a little late since I had to do some work at 8AM; but Ben heads to the barn with me to help with the milking chores and I'm very grateful. My hands are still cramping overnight; but now I go to bed with Icy-Hot and gloves.   It helps and I know it will get better.

After the milking, I text my neighbor to see how's she's doing with her youngest mom goat that had been giving her grief during the milking process and ask her what type of ice cream maker she uses.  She again, being SO generous, offers her maker, to borrow and see if we like it before we buy.  I also commandeer her Kitchen Aid stand mixer for Ben's butter extravaganza!

I made plain vanilla ice cream today.

Ben & his science projects -- Gave birth to Kefir today and has to keep it alive!!!   It's like yogurt, but you drink it.  I'm not game yet, but will try it at some point.

You decide which is better and better for you!

Sunday night ends with a huge laugh!!!  While watching a new "STUPID" new show on TV, "Naked and Afraid" to wind the weekend down...  Ben is startled with a scorpion in bed! -- after a few screams (like a girl), I flicked it off him and smashed it... He had to clean up the mess.  Needless to say, I had scorpion in bed nightmares the whole night.

My on call starts for me again at 7am tomorrow!!! So no Life to speak of until next week... -- I'm thankful for my job and what it give me...  Technology Challenges, Brain Stimulation and Funds to eventually retire on!!!

Keep on smiling....

Too Funny!!!

Ben at the Teat-ie Bar!! I have the best husband in the world.  He's willing to help me milk the girls.  Such a relief and he was very good at it.  But not without some chaos...

The girls show up for their evening treat and milking and Missy is missing.   We call for her and don't find her anywhere.  I help Ben help me get started on milking.  He takes over, then head to the bottom of the pasture, on foot, to see if I can find her.  Nothing - back up to the front pasture, still nothing.  We switch places and he goes to get the truck to drive the pasture fence line to see if I could have missed her.  While I'm milking -- I hear a "MWAHAH", which sounds like a moo and a bhaaa together; coming from an area of the barn there are no goats quarantined.  Sure enough; Missy climbed into the back window of the tack room, what we fondly call "Eddie's room" where we has placed the feed for easy access during milking.   She was happy for the moment; but I'm sure hurting later.  She ate at least 1/4th of the 50# bag.  So we had to get a new strategy with storing the feed.  BUT, at least she was safe and I'm guess unharmed.

So how much can the -- now know as "crazy goat lady" do between 6 and 8 AM?
The irony: city-girl/techno-geek meets the farm life.
  1. turn on sprinklers for garden
  2. make smoothies
  3. start database purge project at work
  4. kiss husband good-bye
  5. do dishes
  6. make bed
  7. feed cats
  8. feed chickens
  9. milk 3 goats & feed the other 2
  10. check honey bee syrup supply
  11. check back into work on project status - start another task
  12. feed dog
  13. fill bird seed in feeders
  14. make hummingbird water
  15. battle red wasps
  16. change bird bath water (mosquito larva growing)
  17. sit a minute with a cup of tea and enjoy the farm and all the animals
  18. take a shower
  19. get to work for the day.
Whew!  Fortunately -- this is not a typical day.  I usually do only 1/2 that much in the mornings!

Girls waiting on their moms' release.

Hoss patiently waiting for breakfast.

Neighbors come by to check out the commotion.

Mom drops by with Candy!   CandyCots  that is!!!
Out of jars - sterilizing 750ml Vodka bottles -- YUM  good milk!  Have been saving up my blue glass vodka bottles for a blue glass art project; but now they come in to immediate need.  Ran out of quart jars this morning to milk the goats with.  We like having the lids and getting a quart at a time.  They are easier to hold and once full can be secured with the lid to keep safe from any kicks, hungry chickens or airborne particles that may find their way into the milk.  I sterilized them in boiling water.

Ok- yes I have a spaghetti pot so big it will hold these bottles.  I feel like everything I own is having a re-purpose in life.  I think I can get rid of it -- then wait!! I need that for....
  • Mason Jars for Milking Jugs instead of canning
  • Spaghetti Pot for Sterilizing Bottles instead of making spaghetti
  • Vodka Bottles for storing Milk instead of me hoarding them for an art project
  • Old tee-shirts become rags instead of straight to the burn pile.
  • Old clothes dress a scare crow.
Nothing goes to waste...  Always reminds me when Grandma saved tin foil to reuse.

Before tonight's milking there is 4 -1/2 gallons of milk in the refrigerator.  So making Butter -- or something tonight and this weekend is a must!!!  Time to start cooking.

Oh My! - Milk, cramps and cries...

I'm finally able to milk the 3 girls solo!  Still takes about an hour but there is a lot less kicking and fighting.  I'm getting almost 2 gallons a day; so my next dilemma is what to do with all this milk?

The girls still cry out for their boys; so it is still a bit sad around here.  But I can tell when I do milk them, they are thankful for the release of pressure.

I'm awaken during the night with hand cramps - hopefully, I'll get stronger and use to the motion and these will stop.

This weekend, my priority is to improve the milking process.   The stand is working out just fine, but the swapping of the girls from the pen to the stand is difficult. I'm thinking a gate to let them into the milking area and another gate to let them out when done.  As soon as feed comes out; I have other girls jumping the gate to join in the feast.  That's when the chaos begins.  I need to clean an area for my supplies and perhaps put up a shelf or ledge; where I can rest the jars out of the way and still be safe.  Either way, I'm sure I'll find more to make the process easier after I get these few things done.

I'm finally picking tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchini from the garden.  It seems late this year, but I guess we got a late start due to the Bermuda battle.

Well off to the Job for the rest of the day.  Hope everyone has a great one too!

Sad Day on the Farm...

We spent Sunday figuring out the round-up and who gets to stay.  One thing for sure is the 7 boys have to go.  We are not ready for the responsibility to castrate and eventually butcher the males for food.  So we take the easy way out and haul them to auction.  I spend several hours in tears; as they (including the boys) have brought much laughter, smiles and fun to the farm.  But, we have to do what is right.

Monday morning, my neighbor brought over her 1 male and the female we gave them last year.  We didn't de-horn any of our kids last year; which made it very dangerous for her and the other animals on their farm.  Many tears later; we know her decision to sell  her was too, a right one.  I kept them contained in the pen for the rest of the day, listening to many cries for the girl that will remain on the farm.

Pip & her boy
Goodbye - 7 boys
Ben got home around 4:30pm and we head out to round-up the 7 boys and prepare for the loading.  The trial run paid off on Sunday; because the loading wasn't as difficult as it had been in the past.  But; now instead of 1 boy and 1 mom crying; we have 8 boys and 5 moms screaming for their kids.  Not a nice sound to hear so we quickly hook up the trailer to the truck and haul them to the front to get the trailer lights working and make sure the tires are ready for the road trip.

Fortunately, it is a nice drive to Fredericksburg where Ben and I get to share stories about the events of the day and reminisce over the last trips where we "didn't know how it all worked" and broke many rules, unknowingly.  The line of trucks and trailers full of sheep and goat stock was about 25 sellers long; but the wait went quickly - about 30 minutes.  We know how it works now; and are able to get in and out without issue.  The 45 minute trip home was quite.  It's done! And I'm sure I'll still shed more tears before the end of today.

I start this Tuesday morning early.  Ben & I are doing a green smoothie drink for breakfast, so I get these whipped up quickly as he heads out the door for work.  I do a few tasks to get my work-day started then load up to take care of the three moms that don't have boys drinking their milk.

My first attempt to milk a couple of months ago was a real fiasco!  What not to do!... I'm expecting this to be quick and easy. HA!  I lock up all the remaining goats in the pen and usher and coax one of the 3 moms (Belle) to the milking stand with a bucket of feed.  So far so good.  As she eats; I get about 2 cups of milk from her; but as she runs out of food - she starts kicking and knocks the milk out of my hand and it spills everywhere!  Just as I say a few choice words and get her more feed; my neighbor shows up to help me out.  She's been doing this for over a month with one of her girls and knows what works best to get the job done!  Before I know it; she has 3 containers full and could get more if we kept at her. But to be honest; Belle was getting more restless and I was done with holding her still.  Maybe next time will be easier with her.

We wash up and round up mom #2 and then #3 - both without any fight or issue.  Missy gave us no grief and provided 3 containers full as well.  Stella too was fairly easy to milk, but slow to get started.  She definitely had a lot of milk; but it was locked up.  Massaging helps release it and my neighbor spent face time with her to keep her calm once the food was gone.

This mornings milk.
The scary part of this all, is they need to be milked twice a day.  This morning took me about an hour with the help of my neighbor.  I don't see Ben getting up with me at 5am to help milk the goats before he goes to work  - so I'm not quite sure how I'm going to work this into my daily schedule.  The evening milkings should be easier since I will have his help.  One thing for sure, I know I'll be getting at least 2 showers a day!  This is work!

I will get it put away and figure out what ice cream, cheese, yogurt, soap or ??? to make with the milk.  My neighbor did butter yesterday - but this takes about 3 weeks for the cream to separate.  We will figure out what we 'like' the best and I'm sure share it with all.

A quick trip to the bee hive to top off their syrup, jump into the shower, and I'm back to work by 8:15 am.   That's the morning done -- we will see how tonight goes.

Happy Birthday Hudson!

I want to wish my youngest nephew Hudson (Hud) Beaton "Happy 5th Birthday"!  You are wonderful, fun boy and we love having you in our lives!

Let there be light!

A task completed that I've always wished for.  Silly as it sounds, lights in the barn.  I've only had 1 light that was outside the barn.  So, Ben installed lights in every inside section of the barn and now I can SEE!  --- more junk we need to get rid of!   I've spent way to many hours in the darkness, hauling a flashlight or headlamp around the barn - so I now have light to really be able to make the barn a better place for all the goats and chickens!

We have started getting rid of this year's Kids.  Our first girl was given to a very nice family in Fair Oaks.  This family provided us the buck to mate with our girls, plus the father of the family generously did the chore of dis-budding the horns off the girls we were going to keep.   They took one of Serenity's girl triplets.  Sad, but happy!

The Middle Fawn Girl - before she was taken to her new home.  Her sisters are keepers on the Rucka Farm!

We put the trailer in place to take the rest of the boy kids (7 of them) auction on Monday.  I get so emotional over this and wish I could keep them all-  but know that is just not the right thing to do on the farm.

Happy 4th of July - Independence Day!

I love this holiday especially for the opportunity to have cook-outs and watch fireworks at a decent hour (just after sunset).

While making bee syrup today; I decided since I have the sugar out to take the pecans out of the freezer too and make pecan pralines.  I used Emeril's recipe off FoodNetwork.com.  It was so easy and turned out very yummy!

Ben's brother, Robert, called and was heading our way.  Yay -- We enjoy his company.  Beverages and  hamburgers make the perfect holiday meal.

We headed to the neighbor's at sunset to watch City of Boerne's Fireworks from their back porch - they have w terrific panoramic view eastward over Boerne.  We could see several private and sponsored firework displays for miles.  A nice, enjoyable evening.

BUT - this must be said!  When will our Government finally realize the reality of American's Independence and give it back to us.  Most of our freedom and liberties have been stripped!  Ok - I'll stop my rant and appreciate the things we do have.

I still quote and sing -- "GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

July 1st - The year's half over.

Funny how time really does fly.  I can't believe it is already July 1st.  Fortunately, a front moved thru yesterday and kept the temperatures around 80 degrees.  Far from our Saturday high of 104 (in the shade).

It is a short work week because of the holiday; so we'll have things to do over the long weekend.
We were laughing that is was just this time 2 years ago we started building the pole barn that is now the garage / workshop.  Seems just like yesterday.

The weekend was great; Ben still working on the garden weeds and his cast iron cookware cleanup; while I made more pet food, tended the bees and battled the heat.  Ben had to go back into work Friday evening and again on Saturday evening.  We tried to go out to eat Friday night - but refuse to wait for a table anywhere - no matter how good the food is.  HEB was our choice; in-out and fried oysters and shrimp 30 minutes later.  Saturday we managed to get into Pappasitos - sat at the bar and had a wonderful appetizer sampler.

Sunday morning chores were interrupted with Rain - it came thru and lasted until almost 11AM.  Yes; stayed in bed, enjoying the rain and  mimosas.  The rest of the day was pretty uneventful after a slow start; but we always manage to get something accomplished.

Happy 4th July Holiday to all.

Last day of vacation!!!

I started this posting before 7am... but life didn't let me complete my thoughts.. A good thing....

Hoss & I sitting in pasture. I enjoy the Mimosa!
"Well, it's officially vacation days off of work; but I actually didn't do anything except the things I wanted to do during my time off.  One more day (or 8 hours) left and then back to normal.  Starting the day watering the garden, walking the dog and a mimosa.  Yeah, I know it's early but I've been up since 5 am and I'm on vacation!  The cloudy overcast mornings are a welcome change to the Hot Sunny Days ahead - so I'm enjoying every minute." .....

Honestly --I'm not complaining because all events are good,  but.....not how I expected to spend my last vacation day....

Sent Laura (my sister) an email regarding 60's hot pink crochet mini skirt and vest attire for a party she'll be attending in the next few weeks.... ALARM.. "No" she replies that it is this weekend... "Time Flies".... and I'm willing to have it express ship it to her... LOL.... ok.. now the fiasco starts because UPS website is broken; their 800# is even worst... so I get dresses quickly to haul the package of Hot Pink Crochet attire to the local UPS store... The lady at the counter and I laugh and reminisce over the 'days gone bye' where the skirts were very short and the hair was long (picture Cher).  I decided since I was in town, I'd see if Mom wanted to share a mimosa morning?  Got her voice mail -- darn!   Well, As I'm filling the truck at HEB, she calls back and "Yes" would love to!  Yeah!  Run into HEB for more cold champagne, juice, a few snacks and items for tonight's dinner and head to Mom's.  Another pleasant surprise was two of Paula's kids (Hudson and Holly) were staying with Grandma!  It's always fun to see them.

After a quick visit, snack and drinks - I needed to head home to get some chores finished and especially turn the garden water off.  But, Paula convinces me to take Hud and he runs the rest of my errands with me; but, No Shoes, (and that's his mother's fault!).   So we stop at Walgreen's to get flip flops or something since they know my rule on the farm is SHOES required.  I'd hate it if one of the babies stepped on glass or rusty metal and had to get a Tetanus shot!  Off to the feed store, Taco Bell and home.  He's such a SMART 4 year old!   Hud & I have lunch together negotiating him to eat his cheese quesadilla in exchange for x# of Skittles.  Yes, this vacation day is not what I had planned, but very enjoyable.

I ended the afternoon with a nap, getting dinner started and no additional chores completed... Sometimes you just have to stop and let time go bye!

Hugs to all the kids out there -- old and young - enjoy your summertime!!!

Happy Birthday Halen!!

Today is Halen's 7th birthday!  He's special to us because he came into the family and our hearts just as we moved to Boerne.  He has a multi-faceted personality and is very talented!  A wonderful part of our family and lives.

I started my day again watering and weeding the garden, removing 4 worms from the tomato bushes!!  They become chicken food.

Placed my birthday call to Halen - but got voice mail so will have to catch him later -- He's in cub scout camp this week so he is hard to catch.

I re-designed / constructed the scarecrow to face the garden and have a new shirt.  I'm not sure about Charlene and her long hair.  Gets so tangled and matted.  I'm giving her another chance to make us laugh!

My day continued with tree trimming, laundry, painting and general clean up.   There's always something to clean up around here.  It is just refreshing to get some of this clutter GONE!!!

Ben gets home close to 5 and we pick eggs, have dinner and enjoy a quite, cool evening inside -- it has gotten really HOT!.

One more day of vacation -- what to do.. what to do???

More babies bees and more construction!

Saturday ended with the rising of the Super Moon!  It was a beautiful start to a nice evening.

2 of the 20
While Ben did his soffit vent construction; I inspected the bee hive and gave them more syrup.  I was trilled to see baby bees emerging and plenty of brood.  The new Queens is doing a great job.

Earlier in the day -- we deconstructed the "chicks" coop.   They have assimilated into the routine with the other girls and now using the right chicken door.  They still are not venturing too far from the coop so we have to still go down there and make sure they all get in by door closing time and there's plenty of fresh water in their jug.

A cleansing burn of more wood and debris we cleaned out of the barn.  Yes we are still burning; but with great caution.  Slowly and surely we will have all this clutter and debris gone!

I picked more peaches and will be making a peach pie for Sunday night's dinner.  The peach liquer will not be ready until July 10-- I'm anxiously awaiting to see how it comes out.

Today will be a busy one too -- a couple of loads of laundry, mowing, more soffit vent construction and more cleanup.  Ben's brother is expected later in the afternoon for dinner - so alot to do before he gets here -- then we relax and visit.

I'm on Vacation thru Wednesday -- SO excited to just do anything I want, whenever I want!.

Road trip and visit with family.

Thursday morning I hit the highway to go see dad in Surfside.  I'm not much on road trips; especially alone, (Ben didn't take any time off to go with me).  I haven't seen dad in months so decided to take a couple of vacation days to visit him.

I enjoy going to the beach; but getting there is not my favorite past-time. I head out at 6:40am after tending to the farm chores and loading up a home cooked meal for dad and myself.  There was little traffic getting thru San Antonio and fortunately overcast skies; blocking the rising sun from blinding me.  I stopped at Buckee's for gas and break.  It's amazing how fast the speed limit is on Texas Highways... posted 75 mph; but most people go over 80!  I settle in on cruise control at 78 - enjoying my million songs on my i-Phone.
Almost 300 miles and 5 hours later - I finally arrive at the beach.  I joined dad, his fishing friends Archie, Woody, John and Melanie on the beach.  They caught 3 small sharks this Thursday morning and thru them all back.  You can see the green water past the third bar so hopes for better fishing later in the the weekend.

The past several weeks in June, the surf fishermen have landed several sharks.  They can only keep 1 per person per day; so they throw back the small ones and only keep the ones worth cleaning.  Either way, shark is good eats!
Dad's Friend, Woody - with his 68" Spinner Shark

Dad & Woody had better luck late May with this catch of (24"'21" 39"), Reds, 2 ( 27", & 26") Reds, 5 Trout ( 28", 26", 25",21" 19"),& 5 Hardheads

Dad and I retreated to the house for a nice visit and pulled pork sandwiches for a late lunch.  It is so nice to see him and see that he is doing so well.

I left around 6:15 to go see Laura and her fairly new "old" house.  It is adorable. No traffic troubles getting thru Houston; but the police were out everywhere.   Laura and I have a nice 'snack' and wine for dinner and watched the Spurs lose over margarita!  I swear these games are rigged to go the full 7 games and predetermined which team will get to win "this year"...  Unfortunately; San Antonio was not the chosen one!

Once we got home - we massaged the dogs and visited until 1AM.  It too was nice to catch up with her.

Friday morning - back on the road by 8:45 - getting into San Antonio at 12:00 noon to have lunch with Ben.  Now I just want to get home to see my dog and the farm!

Fast Trip -31 hours later - I'm Home! --  Very glad I made the trip and may have to try to do this again soon.  Love you Dad! and Laura!!!

Ahhhh.. Monday!!!

Normally, I do not sigh and welcome Mondays -- but I survived yet another On-Call week.  It really wasn't too bad; just interrupts 'life' as you know it.

Sunday was a very productive day.  We started yet another project!  Ben started building the soffit vents under the new carport... This will help with the attic ventilation during the long hot summers.  5 done - 11 more to go.

While he played Ben the Builder -- I was the bermuda warrior.  I worked the garden; ate strawberries, peaches and laughed each time I passed Charlene.  Ben agreed I could turn her around to face the farm as she's not near as noticable from the street as he thought.  Vacation coming up end of this week -- so I'll update her and make changes then.  Next, I cleaned off all the leaves and oak pollen from the gutters.  Odd as it sounds, it is so cleansing to see a clean roof/gutter line.

Ben has been doing a science experiment on all the cast iron cookware we have accumulated over the years.  He has his car battery charger hooked up to iron rods and the cookware which causes an electrolysis reaction to pull the rust and build up off the cookware onto the rods.  -- It actually works! The cookware is looking like glass and I'm excited to start cooking on it once again.

I started my Monday early, opening windows, turning on attic fan to circulate the 74 degree temperature into the house, then headed out to turn the sprinklers on, getting laundry washed and hung on the line and peaches picked to take to Mom.   Plus back to work by 7:30 AM..  I'll take a break shortly to run into Boerne for errands and stop in to see Mom.

All is good today - This Monday!!!
